Mabira Closed Off to Heavy Trucks
Motorists plying the Kampala-Jinja highway are advised to prepare for a traffic diversion at the Mabira section starting Tuesday at 6am.
The diversion is necessary to facilitate road works along this section.
“We’re working with the Traffic Police to ensure adherence to the traffic flow changes and facilitate smooth execution of works,” said Allan Ssempebwa, the spokesperson for the Uganda National Roads Authority.
According to SP Michael Kananura, the Central Liaison Officer for Traffic Police, all heavy trucks will be diverted at Nile Bridge towards Nyenga-Kisoga up to Wantoni in Mukono via the Mukono-Katosi Road.
“Kampala to Jinja motorists will be diverted at Wantoni in Mukono to Kisoga through Nyenga to Jinja,” SP Kananura explained.
To ensure smooth traffic movement and the execution of the road works, police officers along with a team from the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) will be present to guide motorists.
“We appeal to all motorists to adhere to traffic officers’ directives, exercise utmost discipline and patience during the road works,” SP Kananura urged.
“Your cooperation and understanding are greatly appreciated.”
Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and to follow the diversion signs and instructions from traffic officers to avoid any disruptions.
The Kampala-Jinja Highway has been a mess over the years. The particular spot in Mabira has turned into a near-impassible area with many heavy trucks overturning in what is left of the road so often.
UNRA says it will take about two weeks to change the asphalt in the trouble spots and patch up the potholes in the rest of the Mabira Forest stretch – a notorious blackspot.
