Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has secured a prestigious seat on the Executive Board of the Association of World Election Bodies (A-WEB), a global forum uniting election management bodies.
The election occurred during the 6th General Assembly of A-WEB in Bogota, Colombia, on October 23, 2024.
Uganda’s EC, alongside Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), was nominated by members from the African region to fill two vacant board positions representing the continent.
According to Mr Julius Mucunguzi, the EC head of public relations, said both commissions were confirmed by the General Assembly and will serve two-year terms, renewable once.
Uganda and Kenya now join three other African countries—Libya, Sierra Leone, and Mauritius—on the A-WEB Executive Board.
The Executive Board oversees the association’s efforts to promote democratic, free, fair, transparent, and credible elections globally.
In his acceptance speech, Commissioner Peter James Emorut, who represented Uganda’s EC at the General Assembly, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in the Commission.
He pledged to contribute meaningfully to advancing A-WEB’s mission.
A-WEB, headquartered in South Korea, is the world’s largest international organization in election management, consisting of 121 election management bodies from 111 countries.
Since its inception in 2013, A-WEB has worked towards fostering transparent and participatory elections globally.
