Speaker Among denies UK House to Museveni

President Museveni on May 23, 2024 wrote to Speaker Anita Among seeking clarification on reports that she owned a property in London, United Kingdom.

“I have got information that is contrary to what you told me, that you, indeed, own a house in London in the form of Flat 4, Silk House, 7 Waterden Road, London, E20 3AL, United Kingdom,” said Museveni in a letter to Among.

“Do you own that house or are you renting it?” Museveni asked Among.

“By copies of this letter, I direct the Minister of Foreign Affairs to contact the UK Government and get details regarding this house. The IGG is also informed.” he added.

Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Farouk Kirunda confirmed that the letter was legitimate.

“The letter is authentic,” said Kirunda when contacted by ChimpReports on Wednesday evening.

Land registry search

ChimpReports has learned that upon receipt of President Museveni’s letter, the Inspectorate of Government conducted a search with UK’s Land Registry which showed that the apartment is owned by the London Legacy Development Corporation, the organisation behind Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. 

Formed in April 2012, the London Legacy Development Corporation’s purpose was to use the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of the London 2012 Games and the creation of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to develop a dynamic new heart for east London, creating opportunities for local people and driving innovation and growth in London and the UK.

On its website, London Legacy Development Corporation describes itself as a ‘Mayoral Development Corporation’ which is ‘directly accountable to Londoners through the Mayor of London.’

It adds: “We work closely with a number of organisations including the Mayor of London, the Greater London Authority, central government, the East London Host Boroughs, residents in neighbouring local communities, local organisations, businesses and regeneration agencies and national and international sporting, cultural and leisure organisations.”

The company’s board is led by Peter, Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill who took up his role in July 2017.

He is also Chair of Network Rail, and a Trustee of the Science Museum group and of the London Transport Museum. The Chief Executive Officer of the organisation is Lyn Garner.

Tenants are charged $3,000 per month in rent for this apartment

President Museveni recently asked British authorities for credible information confirming that Speaker Anita Among has properties in United Kingdom.

Museveni said in a letter to Foreign Affairs Minister Gen Jeje Odongo dated May 2, 2024 that he met with UK’s envoy to Uganda, Kate Airey before the British slapped sanctions on the Speaker and two former Ministers – Agnes Nandutu and Goretti Kitutu for their involvement in the theft of relief items for Karamoja region. 

“She (Kate) also told me about sanctioning the Rt. Hon. Anita Among. I said: “Why?” She said that Anita Among has got a house or houses in UK and has got bank accounts from which she pays school fees for her children who are studying there,” said Museveni. 

“I told her that the issue of houses would be very interesting if, especially, Anita Among did not declare them in her Leadership Code documents. If she had declared them, then the next issue would be how she got the money to build them. If these two are answered correctly and showing no mistake, the remaining issue would be political, ideological judgement,” he added.

Among told the Parliament that she was not bothered by the sanctions and that she did not “even own a pussy cat” in the UK.

While the UK said the sanctions were related to corruption in the Karamoja iron sheet saga, Among insists the sanctions are because of her role in the enactment of the Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023.
