Prominent Digital Marketer, Commits Suicide in Kampala

John Babirukamu, one of Uganda’s most influential brains in the digital marketing industry, is dead.

Babirukamu passed away on Friday, May 31, 2024.

Reports indicate that Babirukamu committed suicide by jumping off the top floor of Tagore Building in Kamwokya, Kampala.

Shortly before he took his life, Babirukamu told his family members that he had given life his all but “now I find myself with only emptiness.”

“I apologize for being an inconvenience in death as I was in life,” said Babirukamu on his family WhatsApp group at 11:41am today.

“I have given it my all and now I find myself with only emptiness,” he said, adding, “I do sincerely love you all, and hope you find it in your hearts to forgive me.”

“Kiss my nieces and nephews for me. They are the last joy that I held onto.”

Family members tried to reach out to him but didn’t not succeed as his cellphone was switched off.

Moments later, he was pronounced dead.

The incident has raised fears that Babirukamu was possibly overburdened by personal problems.

His digital experience spanned over 15 years.

At the time of his death, Babirukamu was the General Manager at Hedge Marketing – a full-service communications and marketing agency.

He was responsible for business growth, client relationship management, strategy, talent management and management oversight.


Prior to Joining Hedge as the General Manager, John served at QG group as Digital Director and had tremendous success managing brands like NTV, Uganda Breweries Limited, Equity Bank, BRAC, Sheraton Kampala among others.

Why John stands out

Babirukamu was mostly remembered for having took the reins of a barely existing digital marketing unit at NBS and transformed it into Uganda’s most engaging online presence in just three years.

The excellent digital marketing strategies, large social media presence, NBS interactive website you see today is all digital brain from John Babirukamu.

John also served as Digital Communications Manager at MTN for 2 years, having come from Metropolitan Republic, a marketing, advertising agency.

Police are yet to speak about the incident.

However, family members confirmed Babirukamu’s death, describing it as a “tragedy.”

Suicide in Uganda

Cases of suicide have been on the rise in Uganda in recent years.

Uganda is ranked 17th on the list of countries where suicide is registered as a cause of death, with 18.67 per 100,000 deaths due to suicide in Uganda.

In 2019, police processed 456 suicide scenes and 223 attempted suicide cases were reported –signaling a sharp rise in deaths by suicide in the country.

In the 2021 Annual Crime Report, the number of processed suicide scenes by the Crime Investigation Department of Uganda Police grew to 615.

Mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety are major factors contributing to the incidence of suicide, according to World Health Organization.
