UNRA to Conduct Urgent Repairs on Mabira Section of Kampala-Jinja Highway

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced critical maintenance works on the Mabira section of the Kampala-Jinja Highway. The road, which has been plagued by heavy traffic and numerous accidents caused by potholes, will undergo repairs to address the deteriorating surface and improve safety.

The works will commence on Saturday, 23 November 2024, and are expected to conclude by December 7, 2024, during which traffic will be limited to one lane. “Motorists are strongly advised to use the Mukono-Kyetume-Katosi-Kisoga-Nyenga/Njeru road as an alternative route to Kampala/Jinja. Drivers of light vehicles may also consider using the Njeru-Kayunga-Mukono/Kalagi-Gayaza route to Kampala,” UNRA advised.

This development comes in the wake of recent accidents in the Mabira Forest area, which have been attributed to potholes and poor road conditions. The heavy traffic along this vital highway, exacerbated by the damaged sections, has disrupted the smooth flow of vehicles, heightening safety concerns for road users.

The Kampala-Jinja Highway is a critical economic lifeline for Uganda, linking the capital to the eastern region and serving as a key transit route for trade between Uganda and neighboring countries, including Kenya. The highway facilitates the transportation of goods from Mombasa Port to Uganda and beyond, underscoring its significance to the country’s economy.
