Leaked classified audios in the hands of security have allegedly implicated former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president Dr Kizza Besigye in lobbying for arms to fight off the ruling National Resistance
Movement government.
In the audios, a person alleged to be Besigye speaking also hints at the key foreign funders of the opposition including the 2021 elections and says that the country is ready for an insurrection against the
Government.
Exclusively, we obtained the recordings in which the person is overheard talking to a foreigner asking for arms and drones to enable them to take on the Government.
The former four-time presidential candidate, who was arrested on Saturday last week alongside his long-time associate, Haji Obeid
In the recordings, the man describes the current leader of the Opposition, Kyagulanyi Sentamu aka Bobi Wine, as not serious enough to go where the Opposition wants to be. He also talks of introducing fake money to pay farmers in rural areas, and subsequently, cause discontent among the population.
He is also heard bragging about how the Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) is heavily divided and that he has officers ready to support his quest to overthrow the army.
When asked about the capacity of Uganda’s Air Force and whether he can help the attackers with information, the man says: “I told you we have some people in the Air Force. I can get and have a meeting with an Air Force officer [who] is involved in this.”
Asked how far he will go with his coup plan because the Government has the army, the man says: “Very far. First of all, the army itself is highly divided. Very divided, and we have a lot of people within the Army, and even within the Air Force.”
When they told him that they wanted to do some due diligence, the man says: “No problem at all. The challenge, of course, is whether I will be at liberty to put some of our people, again, in trouble because you never know what happens with information.”
Asked whether he needs weapons, the man adds: “Not necessarily. We have the capacity to get the weapons. It is not a big [deal]. What [we need], depending on the way things develop, the only thing that one may require is something for the air.”
