Makerere Guild Elections: Lubega Nsamba’s Victory Challenged

The opposition National Unity Platform (NUP’s) associated candidate in the Makerere University guild elections who emerged winner, has had his victory challenged.

In a tightly contested race, Vincent Lubega Nsamba clinched victory by a slim margin of just four votes garnering 2540 ballots.

Lubega, a second-year student at the College of Humanities and Social Sciences pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences, was declared the winner by Ramadhan Kirunda, the chairperson of the university’s Electoral Commission on Thursday last week.

His closest rival, Edmond Ariho trailed closely behind him with 2536 votes, securing the second position.

Ariho has disputed the election results, and petitioned the Guild Elections Petition Tribunal.

In a letter addressed to University students, and the university leadership, the Dean asked all students to stay calm as petition gets processed.

“Notice is hereby given that Mr. Edmond Ariho, one of the candidates in the 90th gulld elections has disputed the outcome of the elections, in which Mr. Vincent Nsamba Lubega emerged the winner. He has lodged the petition, dated March, 10th, 2024, with the secretary to the Guild Elections Petition Tribunal,” said Winifred Kabumbuli, Dean of Students and Secretary, Guild Elections Petition Tribunal.

“I appeal to the student community and all stakeholders to remain calm while the petition is being processed by the Guild Elections Petition”

A total of 16 candidates competed for the Makerere University 90th Guild seat. Kasekende Fulungensio clinched the third runner-up spot with 1674 votes, while Wandukwa Simon secured the fourth runner-up position with 1039 votes.
