Anyone But You may have already had the best press tour outside of the Barbie movie. The so-called rom-com has been on our tongues since stars Sydney Sweeney and Glenn Powell sparked infidelity rumors while filming in Australia over the summer.
For those who don’t remember—this year has been rife with celebrity breakups and cheating allegations, after all—Powell and Sweeney’s undeniable chemistry caused quite the commotion, thanks to some steamy on-set photos, press appearances, and one particular flirty behind-the-scenes video that went viral on Twitter. Rumors were only exacerbated by the fact that Powell’s ex-girlfriend, Gigi Paris, unfollowed the Euphoria star on Instagram before seemingly confirming her split from the Top Gun actor in late April. Meanwhile, Sweeney and fiancée Jonathan Davino were suddenly at the center of a wave of breakup speculation.
Now, with the release of new trailers and information about the upcoming film, it appears all the drama could not have been a better advertisement for the film, which may not be the simple enemies-to-lovers romp many of us were expecting. Here’s everything we know about Anyone But You.
When will Anyone But You be released?
As of right now, the R-rated film will be released in theaters on December 22, 2023.
Obviously, Powell and Sweeney are the stars of the film, but Sweeney also served as an executive producer. Easy A‘s Will Gluck directed the film and worked on the script with writer Ilana Wolpert.
Other cast members include Alexandra Shipp, GaTa, Hadley Robinson, Michelle Hurd, Dermot Mulroney, Darren Barnet, and Rachel Griffiths.
What is Anyone But You about?
Not much was known about the rom-com when it was first announced in January 2023, but the title very much implies an enemies-to-lovers vibe. “Just know the movie is going to be so much fun. It is so funny. And it gives love, it gives humor, it gives sex,” Sweeney told Entertainment Tonight in March. “It gives all the great things that make a movie. And we want to bring back the good ol’ rom-coms with Will Gluck, and we’re having a great time doing it.”
Immediately following filming, Powell and Sweeney hopped on a plane to discuss the movie further at Las Vegas CinemaCon 2023. “As you could probably guess, this movie’s about two people that hate each other. Sydney plays a character [who is] a real nightmare,” Powell said on April 24, per People. Meanwhile, Sweeney said Powell’s character is “a real asshole…a real dickhead.”
As of October, we have a bit more to go on. It turns out Gluck and Wolpert are also bringing back the good old fake dating trope and were loosely inspired by William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. “In the edgy comedy Anyone But You, Bea (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben (Glen Powell) look like the perfect couple, but after an amazing first date something happens that turns their fiery hot attraction ice cold—until they find themselves unexpectedly thrust together at a destination wedding in Australia. So they do what any two mature adults would do: pretend to be a couple,” Sony’s film synopsis reads.
SK Global Entertainment also released a film synopsis, writing, “Over a year after meeting for the first time and attempting a disastrous one-night stand, late 20’s singles Bea and Ben are forced to co-exist at their mutual friends’ destination wedding in Australia.”
Is there a trailer?
Oh yeah.“There’s no way we can convince anyone we actually like each other,” Powell’s character Ben says in the steamy teaser released on October 19, to which Bea replies, “We are at a wedding a million miles away from home; who knows what could happen?”
How do Sweeney and Powell feel about the drama?
Before we get into that, let’s just take a moment to point out that the pair are clearly very good at convincing folks that they’re an item. Could those cute moments at CinemaCon have been a stealth advertisement for the true plot of the film? We can’t answer that, but we can say that Sweeney doesn’t appear too pressed about the online reactions.
“It’s a rom-com,” she said in one Variety interview published in August 2023. “That’s what people want! Glen and I don’t really care. We have so much fun together, and we respect each other so much; he’s such a hard worker, and I’m a hard worker. We’re excited for the press tour, and I literally just left ADR with him. We talk all the time like, ‘That’s really funny.’”
Regarding their public dynamic, she continued, “They want it. It’s fun to give it to ’em.”
